The Democratic Party of Kazakhstan “Azat” planned to hold a republic-wide rally on February 21 to demand resignation of the Massimov-Kulibayev government, which is unable to take adequate anti-crisis measures. The party has filed all necessary applications for the rally in local administrative bodies (in Kazakhstan, the freedom of assembly is restricted to the approval of local municipalities and special designated zones on the outskirts of towns). Practically all applications were turned down under ridiculous pretexts.Azat

01.12.2008 - Fulfill OSCE Commitments on Human Rights
The Kazakh government should make meaningful human rights reforms before it takes over the chairmanship of a major regional organization, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. Kazakhstan's human rights record is inconsistent with standards embraced by the regional group, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), and so its chairmanship, which will start in 2010, risks undermining the integrity of the institution's human rights principles.HRW

19.03.2008 - Opposition Party to Launch Drive for Signatures Campaign
In a country with multi-party system, the main indicator of political life is the activity of parties, especially in the periods between elections. In this regard, it can be seen that there are actually only two parties active now — the ruling “Nur Otan” and “Azat”, the former “True Ak Zhol” party led by Bulat Abilov. In response to “Nur Otan’s” crusade against corruption, “Azat” declares war to poverty and believes that it’s demands reflect the people’s will.

Many undoubtedly can recall what happened to the leaders of Kazakhstan’s first opposition movement, Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan (DCK), which appeared in early 2002.
